Update: FCC Blocks Nationwide Broadband

Lessons From Chicago WiMAX World, Akron Marathon, FTTH Conference

September 13th, 2007

I reported a few posts back that a smaller company called M2Z Networks was vying for an unlicensed and unused spectrum band to provide nationwide wireless broadband. It turns out that the FCC has dismissed the proposal  as well as one from another small company, NetfreeUS LLC. (Computer World reports here and here.)

My feeling then was, and still is, that the FCC is more focused on the 700 MHz auction, which will be much more lucrative for the commission if the heavy hitters respond like Google says it will. Is the FCC only interested in a national broadband plan if somebody shows them the money? Or is the FCC playing favorites with the giant corporations? [Is that the same thing?]
